Overview

India, as the world’s largest milk producer with its vast cattle population, generates enormous quantities of cattle dung and other organic residues that often remain underutilised. At the same time, the country faces a significant rise in energy demand, particularly in rural areas, where access to clean, affordable, and sustainable energy remains a challenge.

The rural household biogas programme offers a sustainable pathway to address this challenge by converting cattle waste into clean cooking energy while mitigating methane emissions that would otherwise escape into the atmosphere. As a household biogas plant NGO initiative, the programme promotes clean energy access while reducing dependence on conventional fuels like firewood and LPG, improving rural waste management and sanitation, and creating economic opportunities for women. Smoke-free kitchens also help reduce women’s drudgery and health risks.

The nutrient-rich biofertiliser produced as a by-product can be applied to farmlands, improving soil health, reducing chemical fertiliser use, and supporting sustainable agriculture. This approach strengthens rural livelihoods and women’s well-being while contributing to India’s net-zero targets, renewable energy goals, and green energy transition. It reinforces circular economy principles, making household biogas a cornerstone of sustainable rural development.
