Mobius Household Biogas Programme
A large-scale, decentralized biogas programme that converts cattle waste into clean energy and organic fertilizer while empowering rural and women dairy farmers across multiple states.
Our Footprint
Overview
India, as the world’s largest milk producer with its vast cattle population, generates enormous quantities of cattle dung and other organic residues that often remain underutilized. At the same time, the country faces a significant rise in energy demand, particularly in rural areas, where clean, affordable, and sustainable energy access remains a challenge.
Rural household biogas programme offers a sustainable pathway to address this challenge by converting cattle waste into clean cooking energy while simultaneously mitigating methane emissions that would otherwise escape into the atmosphere. The adoption of household biogas not only reduces dependence on conventional fuels like firewood and LPG but also improves rural waste management and sanitation. Additionally, smoke-free kitchens reduce women’s drudgery and health risks, while also opening up economic opportunities for them.
The nutrient-rich bio-fertilizer produced as a by-product can be applied to farmlands, improving soil health, reducing chemical fertilizer use, and supporting sustainable agriculture. Such an approach not only strengthens rural livelihoods and women’s well-being but also directly contributes to India’s net-zero targets, renewable energy goals and green energy transition. It reinforces circular economy principles, making biogas a cornerstone of sustainable rural development.
Programme Objectives
How We Do It
Clean Energy through Sustainable Practices
- Promote the use of biogas technology to convert cow dung into clean, renewable energy for everyday household needs
- Encourage a shift from traditional fuels such as firewood and dung cakes to smoke-free and environmentally friendly cooking solutions
- Demonstrate how locally available resources can be used to create sustainable and affordable energy systems in rural communities
Circular Use of Farm Resources
- Support a circular approach to dairy farming by transforming organic waste into valuable energy and natural fertilizer.
- Encourage the use of bio-slurry in agriculture to improve soil health and reduce dependence on chemical fertilizers.
- Promote responsible waste management practices that link dairy farming, agriculture, and environmental sustainability.
Empowering Rural and Women Dairy Farmers
- Reduce the physical burden and time spent on fuel collection and traditional cooking practices.
- Enable women to focus more on livelihood activities, dairy management, and family well-being.
- Strengthen women’s role in decision-making, sustainable farming, and household energy management.
Community-Led Sustainable Development
- Work closely with farmer groups, cooperatives, and local institutions to encourage community ownership of clean energy solutions.
- Promote awareness on climate-friendly practices that benefit farmers, households, and local ecosystems.
- Build a long-term culture of sustainability, resource efficiency, and climate responsibility in rural communities.

MoU Signing
Mobius Foundation has partnered with the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) organisations – NDDB Dairy Services, NDDB Mrida and leading Milk Producer Companies – Sakhi, Paayas, Asha, Maalav, and Indujaa – to implement a transformative, decentralized solution that converts cattle waste into clean biogas and organic fertilizer. The Program will install 5,000 household biogas plants across Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra, providing rural and women dairy farmers with clean cooking fuel, organic fertilizer and opportunities for economic empowerment. The partnership has laid the foundation for a large-scale, multi-state rollout of biogas plants, leveraging innovative climate financing mechanisms to deliver a scalable circular economy solution.
