The article argues that the global energy transition is real but insufficient. Renewable energy and EV adoption are growing, but the Strait of Hormuz crisis shows how exposed the world economy remains to fossil fuel disruptions. This article’s central point is that clean energy has mostly added to the fossil fuel supply rather than displaced it. Hard-to-abate sectors, such as heavy industry, freight, shipping, and aviation, continue to run on oil and gas, and until decarbonization reaches them, climate goals will remain out of reach.
