Overview

The Mobius Young Climate Leaders for Himalayan Development (MYCL) is a flagship initiative of the Mobius Foundation, implemented with the Climate Studies Knowledge Solutions Centre, Government of Nagaland, and YouthNet. The project promotes youth-led climate action and environmental education across North East India.

Launched in Nagaland in 2024, MYCL has expanded to Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, and Sikkim through partnerships with regional organisations,,including Amyaa (Arunachal Pradesh), Aaranyak (Assam), Bakdil (Meghalaya), Mission Foundation Movement (Mizoram), Khangchendzonga Conservation Committee (Sikkim), and Organization for Rural Survival (Tripura).

A key component is the ‘Pani-Pahar Curriculum’, developed by the University of Cambridge with The Hearth Advisors, now implemented in 112 schools across the region. The curriculum strengthens environmental literacy and civic engagement, helping students understand how individual actions contribute to addressing climate change, conserving biodiversity, and protecting the environment.

MYCL also builds capacity of young professionals in environment and forest management, in partnership with relevant state departments and supports research on climate, conservation, and sustainable development to strengthen evidence-based policy and community action.

How We Do It

Interventions

Mobius Green Friday Initiative

  • Student-led weekly recycling drives that transform homes and schools into centers for responsible waste segregation.
  • Distribution of wet and dry waste bins in schools, helping embed everyday waste management practices among students.
  • Over 2,300 kg of recyclable waste collected, contributing to reduced carbon emissions and lasting behaviour change among youth.

Curriculum Delivery & School Engagement

  • Integration of the Pani-Pahar curriculum into school learning, supported by teacher training and student sensitisation on climate and conservation.
  • Strong backing from school management and local governance bodies, strengthening programme ownership and long-term sustainability.
  • Capacity building of 60+ Mobius Young Professionals (MYPs) and 8 Mobius Development Professionals (MDPs) to support curriculum delivery and on-ground environmental action.

Hands-on Forestry Experience

  • Young professionals contributed to GIS-based forest mapping, biodiversity documentation, and sustainable project management, strengthening evidence-based environmental planning.
  • Engagement with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Honey Mission initiatives deepened their understanding of ecosystem services and community-based conservation.

Research & Development

  • Advanced research with communities and state institutions on climate change, urban ecosystems, wetlands, solid waste management, water use, and forest-based livelihoods, contributing inputs to state climate action plans.
  • Documentation of Indigenous knowledge systems, translating traditional practices into research and policy insights on soil conservation, traditional agriculture, water harvesting, ecotourism, beekeeping, and community-led environmental stewardship across Northeast India.

Capacity Building of Youth

  • Strengthened the capacity of Mobius Young Professionals (MYPs) through field exposure, nature-based learning, GIS and environmental training, workshops, and community engagement on biodiversity, climate awareness, waste management, and sustainable practices.
  • Built institutional partnerships with government departments, Japan International Cooperation Agency-supported projects, forest and agriculture agencies, and village cooperatives to advance forest conservation, watershed management, agroforestry, sustainable livelihoods, and community-led resource management.
