Rural India as a Hub of Ecotourism

Rural India is emerging as a powerful ecotourism hub, driven by policy support, growing traveller demand for sustainability, and strong community participation. Government initiatives like the National Strategy for Ecotourism, Swadesh Darshan 2.0, and PRASHAD are strengthening eco-circuits, infrastructure, and skills, while rural communities are witnessing higher incomes, women’s entrepreneurship, youth employment, and conservation gains. With the ecotourism market expanding rapidly and successful models across Kerala, Meghalaya, Nagaland, and other states, the sector is transforming rural livelihoods and ecosystems. However, challenges such as overcrowding, greenwashing, and climate risks require stronger regulation, capacity building, and ecological safeguards to ensure long-term sustainability.
