Overview

The project supports Uttar Pradesh’s education reform by strengthening Competency-Based Education (CBE) and community-led school governance in government schools across Bahraich and Shravasti. It addresses key challenges including low learning outcomes, limited learner-centric pedagogy, and weak community engagement. The initiative promotes a shift from rote learning to competency-based teaching that builds foundational literacy, numeracy, and life skills.

Teachers are supported to adopt student-focused instructional practices aligned with defined learning outcomes. In parallel, the project strengthens community participation through School Management Committees and local stakeholders to enhance accountability and school functioning.

By integrating classroom improvement with community ownership, the project aims to create an inclusive, effective, and sustainable education ecosystem at the grassroots level.

How We Do It

Interventions

Bahraich: Competency-Based Education (CBE)

In Bahraich, the initiative strengthens classroom learning by embedding Competency-Based Education into everyday teaching practice. The focus is on enabling meaningful learning experiences through structured teacher support, peer learning, and CBE-aligned assessment tools. Teachers are supported through regular Teachers’ Collectives, classroom observations, and data-driven planning sessions, enabling improved pedagogy, reflective practice, and stronger student learning outcomes.

Shravasti: Institutionalising Community Participation

In Shravasti, the initiative strengthens school governance by activating Gram Panchayats, School Management Committees (SMCs), and cross-departmental education committees. The focus is on building sustainable, community-owned education solutions through strong collaboration among parents, PRI members, teachers, and government officials. This approach institutionalises local planning, improves accountability, and ensures shared responsibility for school performance and student outcomes.
